Richemont watchmaker makes fake-proof watch
The Swiss Customs Service estimates up to 40 million fake watches are put into circulation around the world each year. Last year Switzerland exported only about 26 million watches, so there’s a fairly good chance the expensive-looking watch on your neighbour’s wrist is a fake.
Many might think this was funny – but not Swiss watchmakers, such as Richemont. Financière Richemont SA, the luxury conglomerate that owns such oft-counterfeited brands as Vacheron Constantin, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, might be losing millions of euros each year, due to the activities of fake-watchmakers.
Now there is light in the tunnel. Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin created a wristwatch that it says is “impossible to counterfeit”. Read all about this breakthrough here.
