Maria Ramos, the wife of SA finance minister Trevor Manuel, resigned as non-executive director of SABMiller yesterday, to pave the way for her new position as CEO of ABSA – a position she’ll take up on 1 March. ABSA is SA’s biggest bank.

South African newspapers reported yesterday president Mbeki had called a special sitting of parliament for today. Although he didn’t say what it was about, the media speculated Mbeki might use the opportunity to fire his deputy Zuma. [Read on]
